If you or someone you know would benefit from a weekly visit from one of our volunteers, you can refer them via the referral form at the bottom of this page. Alternatively you can call us to discuss and refer over the phone.
Our volunteers are interviewed, DBS checked and need to provide two independent referees prior to attending mandatory training. Volunteers receive ongoing training and advice so they can provide the best possible support to vulnerable clients. They also have to submit reports of their weekly visits to the staff team.
Volunteers will provide:
- Companionship…a chat over a cup of tea
- Emotional support
- Assist with correspondence
- Help the client to get out…to the park/shops if possible
- Help a family/friend who is a carer to have time off
Volunteers do not undertake:
- The weekly shop
- Deal with Housing support, management problems, etc
Anyone can refer a client to the VLS simply by completing our referral form. Our only criteria for clients are that they are:
- Socially isolated and wants a volunteer visitor
- Live within Ealing Borough
Once referred to the our service, one of our Befriending Coordinators will make an appointment to visit the client to introduce the service and ensure that they meet the criteria. The client will then go on the waiting list until a suitable volunteer can be found. While on the waiting list, the Befriending Coordinators provide weekly telephone support until they are linked with a volunteer. A member of staff will then take a volunteer to the client to introduce them and will carefully monitor the first few meetings to ensure that the client is happy with their volunteer and vice versa.
Most of our clients are older people, 86% are aged over 75 years older, we will however be happy to assess younger clients if they fit the criteria for having a volunteer befriender.
